SWITZERLAND – MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has introduced iReefer, its most advanced container monitoring system designed for reefer cargo.

This cutting-edge digital solution enables customers to track and monitor their temperature-controlled shipments in real time, from anywhere in the world.

With iReefer, users gain real-time insights into their shipments, including position, temperature, humidity, and other key metrics.

The platform is accessible via myMSC, MSC’s proprietary e-business platform, or through an API integration for seamless data access.

Tailored iReefer packages for customers

MSC offers three distinct iReefer packages, allowing customers to select the best option for their business needs.

The first is the iReefer Essential which is free of charge and available immediately. This package provides an overview of current and historic reefer shipments, a container journey log, and graphical data visualization.

The second option is the iReefer Pro. It includes all features of iReefer Essential, with additional benefits such as unlimited data downloads and container GPS tracking.

Then comes the iReefer Ultimate designed for high-volume shippers. This package integrates directly with customer systems via API for automated data transfer. Both Pro and Ultimate packages will be available starting 1 March 2025.

Global leader in refrigerated transport

As one of the world’s largest transporters of refrigerated cargo, MSC handles over one million reefer containers annually.

The company boasts one of the most advanced reefer fleets and employs over 1,000 reefer specialists worldwide.

The launch of iReefer marks another milestone in MSC’s digital evolution, complementing existing solutions such as MSC Smart Containers for remote dry cargo monitoring.

This project involved equipping over 210,000 reefer containers and more than 500 vessels with iReefer technology. MSC plans to extend this initiative across its entire fleet in the coming years.

“This exciting launch highlights MSC’s unique ability to merge advanced digital solutions with personalized customer service,” said Giuseppe Prudente, Chief Logistics Officer of MSC and President of MEDLOG.

“iReefer is designed with customers in mind, ensuring they can closely monitor and control cargo to facilitate better planning and maintain product quality.”

Enhancing cold chain logistics with digitalization

The launch of iReefer aligns with the growing global demand for refrigerated cargo and streamlined digital solutions.

Key benefits include real-time monitoring and temperature control, enhanced container security, iImproved regulatory compliance, and data-driven insights for optimizing supply chain efficiency.

It also offers reduced costs by minimizing cargo spoilage and insurance claims.

To access iReefer, customers must log into myMSC or create an account. API integration will be available with iReefer Ultimate upon its release in March 2025.

Competing in a digital environment

MSC is not the first shipping company to introduce smart reefer technology. Competitors such as Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, and CMA CGM have already launched similar systems.

However, MSC, as the world’s largest container carrier, has the highest reefer container capacity among liner operators, giving it a competitive advantage in the market.

Service adjustments for melon exports

In addition to launching iReefer, MSC has announced modifications to its shipping routes to support the melon export season in Senegal and Mauritania.

The company has adjusted its standalone Spain-to-Mauritania-and-Senegal service to enhance efficiency for exporters, including an exclusive direct call to Sète, France, serving the French and Italian markets.

The company is also offering a direct connection to Valencia, Spain and weekly departures from Dakar and Nouakchott, ensuring consistent fresh produce shipments to the West Mediterranean.

This service is set to begin in mid-February, with MSC deploying its modern reefer fleet to maintain cargo quality throughout the journey.
