INDIA – One Bamboo has unveiled 100% plastic-free husk glasses, a product designed to reduce plastic waste at large-scale events, marking its debut in India.

These compostable glasses launched during Beverage Week Delhi 2024, provide an innovative alternative to traditional plastic and paper products.

The launch comes at a time when the global market for eco-friendly packaging is experiencing rapid growth. According to a report by Research and Markets, the global sustainable packaging market was valued at approximately US$247 billion in 2021 and is projected to reach $470 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.2%.

In India, the demand for biodegradable packaging has been bolstered by increasing environmental awareness and government regulations aimed at curbing single-use plastics.

One Bamboo’s vision and industry collaborations

Rishabh Singh, co-founder of One Bamboo, discussed the challenges of launching a new product in the sustainability sector.

“I was initially worried about how well the product would be received,” Singh admitted.

However, a collaboration with Zomato proved crucial. By adopting the husk glasses at events and concerts, Zomato significantly reduced plastic waste while advancing its own sustainability goals of achieving carbon- and plastic-neutral food deliveries.

Singh also revealed that One Bamboo is developing food delivery containers made from the same compostable material, further aligning with Zomato’s eco-conscious mission.

Singh further expressed gratitude for support from Team Innovation, a leading event management company, which integrated husk glasses into its eco-friendly event strategies.

“While many companies overlook environmental concerns, Team Innovation has been steadfast in its commitment to sustainable practices,” Singh said.

Competitors driving innovation in eco-friendly packaging

One Bamboo joins a competitive market where several companies are making strides in sustainable packaging solutions.

Firms like Ecoware and Pappco Greenware, both based in India, have introduced a variety of biodegradable products, including plates, cutlery, and food containers made from materials like sugarcane bagasse and cornstarch.

Globally, companies such as TIPA Corp and Notpla are also leading the charge with innovative solutions like compostable flexible packaging and seaweed-based alternatives to plastic, respectively.

According to market analysis, the food and beverage sector accounts for nearly 60% of the demand for eco-friendly packaging. In response, brands are increasingly adopting sustainable practices.

For example, Coca-Cola has committed to making 100% of its packaging recyclable by 2025 as part of its “World Without Waste” strategy. Meanwhile, Nestlé has pledged to reduce its use of virgin plastics by one-third within the same timeframe.

These initiatives, combined with consumer demand, are driving innovation across the industry.

Consumer shift towards sustainability

The push for sustainable packaging is also being fueled by consumer behavior. A survey by Deloitte found that 57% of global consumers are willing to pay more for eco-friendly packaging, with younger generations leading the charge.

In India, a 2023 report by India Brand Equity Foundation revealed that 72% of consumers prefer brands that use biodegradable or recyclable packaging.

One Bamboo’s husk glasses tap into this shift, offering a practical and sustainable solution for large-scale events.

The glasses are not only biodegradable but also compostable, breaking down into organic matter without leaving behind harmful residues.

Broader vision for sustainability

One Bamboo Private Limited is expanding its portfolio to include a range of eco-friendly products, catering to schools, hotels, corporate clients, and event organizers.

Beyond products, the company collaborates with educational institutions to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices among students.
