KENYA – Carrefour Kenya has expanded its footprint with the launch of its 28th store at Maasai Mall Rongai, reinforcing its presence in the country’s retail sector.
The new store, which opened on February 7, is set to serve the growing customer base in Rongai and surrounding areas with a diverse range of products and a focus on affordability and convenience.
The retailer, operated by Majid Al Futtaim, continues to strengthen its position in Kenya, with 23 stores in Nairobi and its environs, three in Mombasa, and one in Kisumu.
This latest expansion is part of Carrefour’s strategy to enhance accessibility and provide customers with a seamless shopping experience both in-store and online.
Expansion and job creation
Carrefour’s expansion in Kenya has contributed to job creation, with over 700 new positions generated in 2024 alone. This brings the total number of Carrefour employees in Kenya to more than 2,800.
The retail chain also maintains a strong commitment to supporting local suppliers, sourcing 99% of its products from over 690 local farmers, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and manufacturers.
Speaking about the latest store opening, Carrefour Kenya’s District Manager for Supermarkets, Alexandre Cerqueira, highlighted the teamwork behind the expansion.
“Everyone moved in the same direction with one clear goal: opening the store as quickly as possible while ensuring we deliver the best for our customers,” he stated.
Growing demand for retail space
Kenya’s retail sector has witnessed sustained growth, with both local and international retailers expanding their presence.
According to the Cytonn Report, the average rental yield in the retail sector increased to 7.5% in 2023, up from 6.8% in 2022. The average occupancy rate also rose to 79.4% in 2023, reflecting increased demand for retail space.
Carrefour’s recent expansion aligns with these market trends, as the retailer continues to cater to evolving consumer needs while contributing to the local economy.
The Maasai Mall Rongai store is expected to offer a wide selection of fresh produce, groceries, household essentials, and other consumer goods.
Recent openings and market positioning
Carrefour Kenya has been on a steady growth trajectory, with multiple store openings in the past year.
In November 2024, the retailer launched its 25th outlet at Runda Mall, Nairobi, just a month after opening its 24th store at Nord Mall in Ruiru Town. In April of the same year, it established a 600-square-meter supermarket at the Global Trade Centre in Westlands, Nairobi.
These expansions aim to meet the needs of Kenya’s rapidly urbanizing regions, particularly in high-growth residential and commercial hubs.
