SWEDEN – Billerud has developed a recyclable, heat-sealable paper designed to replace plastic in food packaging applications that require high sealing performance and recyclability.

The new solution, known as ConFlex HeatSeal, aims to provide an alternative to plastic food packaging while maintaining efficiency within existing production systems.

Sustainability and industry adoption

The company emphasizes its commitment to sustainability, highlighting the need for materials that align with global efforts to reduce reliance on fossil-based packaging in the food sector.

According to Robert Torstensson, Vice President of Business Area Paper at Billerud, ConFlex HeatSeal is a commercially viable option that enables food businesses to transition away from plastic.

The solution offers strong sealing properties and recyclability within established paper recovery systems. Billerud also provides transition support for food companies that may require modifications to their converting processes.

ConFlex HeatSeal has already been introduced in food packaging by a major Swedish brand. The company now anticipates its adoption in various food applications, offering a lower-carbon alternative for businesses seeking to reduce their environmental impact while utilizing existing machinery.

Performance and compatibility

Billerud states that the heat-sealable paper delivers strong sealing performance, making it suitable for a wide range of food packaging needs, including dry goods, bakery items, and frozen foods.

While the company notes that some machinery adjustments may be necessary, it emphasizes that these modifications do not require significant investment.

The recyclability of ConFlex HeatSeal has been tested by the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI), where it achieved a score of 18 out of 20 points.

This indicates its compatibility with existing recycling systems and its potential contribution to a circular economy by reducing food packaging waste and keeping valuable materials in use.

Industry trends and related developments

The industry is currently looking at replacing plastic with recyclable paper-based alternatives in the food sector.

Similar developments have been seen in food packaging, such as UPM Specialty Papers and Unipaco’s recyclable, heat-sealable wrapper for salad and herb pots, which meets Germany’s 95/5 mono-material requirements.

UPM’s Confidio Pro barrier paper, for example, offers heat-sealable and recyclable properties with moisture and grease resistance, making it suitable for food packaging applications.

Mondi has also introduced paper-based food packaging solutions, including a heat-sealable paper for dry food products. These innovations reflect the increasing regulatory pressure on single-use plastics in the food industry and the growing demand for sustainable alternatives.

Billerud has previously developed surface-treated paper made from virgin fiber for cold-seal coating applications in food packaging. This includes materials designed for snack bags, confectionery wrappers, and other single-use food packaging solutions, further demonstrating the company’s efforts to provide sustainable alternatives within the food industry.
