SENEGAL – Maersk has officially launched a new, state-of-the-art warehousing facility in Dakar, Senegal, further expanding its logistics capabilities across West Africa.
The new site, spanning 10,000 square meters, is strategically located between the Port of Dakar and the city’s industrial zone, offering direct access to critical logistics infrastructure just 10 kilometers away.
This proximity enhances Maersk’s ability to streamline operations within Senegal and extend its services to neighbouring countries in the region.
The new facility represents a crucial step in Maersk’s ongoing expansion in West Africa, with an emphasis on supporting regional economic growth through seamless, integrated supply chain solutions.
Maersk is a global leader in integrated logistics services, operating in over 130 countries and employing approximately 100,000 people.
The company offers a wide range of services, including shipping, container logistics, and supply chain management.
Maersk has made significant investments in infrastructure, technology, and sustainability to meet the changing needs of its customers and help reduce the environmental impact of its operations.
The company’s goal is to become net-zero in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, supported by the introduction of new technologies, greener vessels, and alternative fuels.
Maersk’s continued expansion in West Africa highlights its long-term commitment to the region, where logistics infrastructure plays a crucial role in driving economic development.
Strategic location enhances supply chain connectivity
Dakar’s new warehouse is poised to serve both the Senegalese market and its West African neighbours.
With a strategic position near key ports and industrial zones, the site provides Maersk with a key advantage in terms of reducing distribution time and supporting cross-border logistics within the region.
The warehouse has a 5,100-square-meter indoor storage capacity, complemented by an additional 500 square meters of outdoor space.
The facility can handle up to 7,036 pallet positions, accommodating a diverse range of goods, including fast-moving consumer products, electronics, retail merchandise, and lifestyle items.
This flexibility ensures that the warehouse can cater to various industries, from fashion and technology to consumer goods, making it a versatile asset for businesses seeking to optimise their supply chains.
Advanced services and technology to streamline operations
Beyond storage capacity, the facility is designed to offer a suite of value-added services that can simplify logistics for clients.
These services include order management, labelling, packaging, palletisation, and custom palletising. This comprehensive approach allows businesses to consolidate their supply chain activities under one roof, reducing operational complexity and enhancing efficiency.
The warehouse is equipped with a modern Warehouse Management System (WMS) and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) technologies. These systems enable real-time transaction tracking and improved visibility across the supply chain.
They also facilitate seamless integration with customers’ existing digital platforms, offering enhanced traceability and faster decision-making processes.
Sustainability and safety at the forefront
In line with Maersk’s global commitment to sustainability, the new facility incorporates green technologies to reduce its environmental impact.
The warehouse is powered by 60% solar energy and features electric material-handling vehicles, contributing to the company’s ongoing efforts to decarbonize logistics operations.
These sustainability measures are part of Maersk’s larger strategy to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
Safety is another priority in the design and operation of the facility. The warehouse is equipped with advanced safety features, including forklift cameras, pedestrian sensors, and a robust fire protection system.
The facility also has 24/7 surveillance, meeting both local and international safety standards to ensure the protection of personnel and goods stored on-site.
Expanding Maersk’s regional network
This new warehouse is the latest addition to Maersk’s extensive logistics network across West Africa.
The company currently operates in eight countries in the region, including Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, Guinea, Togo, and Benin, with a combined footprint of over 100,000 square meters of warehouse space.
Each of these facilities adheres to high Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) standards, ensuring consistent quality across Maersk’s operations in the region.
The Senegalese warehouse marks a further strengthening of Maersk’s position as a leader in integrated logistics services, providing customers with reliable and efficient solutions for warehousing, distribution, and cross-border transportation.
