NIGERIA – International Breweries Plc (IBPLC) continues to strengthen its commitment to entrepreneurship and economic growth through its 2024 Retailer Development Programme (RDP). 

Designed to equip local retailers with essential business skills and promote financial inclusion, the initiative is fostering sustainable growth in Nigeria’s retail sector and beyond.

“Small businesses are the backbone of communities, creating employment, providing services, and driving innovation. Our program empowers them with skills, mentorship, and resources to thrive,” Carlos Coutino, Managing Director of IBPLC, noted the program’s impact on local economies.

Expanded reach and impact

In its 2024 iteration, the RDP has trained over 800 retailers across major markets in Port Harcourt, Onitsha, Ilesha, Lagos, and Sagamu. 

The program is on track to empower a total of 1,000 retailers by year’s end, marking a significant leap from its 2023 edition, which supported 150 participants. 

Beyond Nigeria, the initiative has extended its reach to six additional African countries, solidifying IBPLC’s role as a key driver of regional economic empowerment.

Hybrid model for accessibility

The program’s hybrid training model offers participants the choice between in-person and virtual sessions, making it more inclusive and adaptable to diverse schedules and locations. 

This approach has increased the accessibility of the training, ensuring that more retailers can benefit from the curriculum, irrespective of geographic or time constraints.

“Strengthening our retailers supports their communities and fosters sustainable business growth. The name GRIT reflects our determination to achieve shared value with stakeholders,” Temitope Oguntokun, Director of Corporate Affairs & Regulatory, highlighted the broader implications.

Comprehensive curriculum for growth

The RDP focuses on three core pillars: Inclusion, Education, and Growth. Training modules cover areas critical for retail success, including financial management, stock-taking, business growth strategies, and responsible beer retailing.

Workshops also include financial literacy, digital skills, and leadership training, preparing participants to navigate evolving market demands.

“When our retailers grow, our business grows. This training equips them to thrive, contributing to socio-economic development,” National Sales Director Nicholas Kade lauded the resilience of participants.

Retailer experiences

Participants have praised the program for its transformative impact.
“I’ve learned, unlearned, and relearned. The program provided networking opportunities and best business practices,” Samuel Onyeulor, General Manager of Retta Park Hotel, remarked.

Pretty Joseph shared how the training improved stock management and service delivery, helping maintain profitability amid economic challenges.
