NIGERIA – Nigerian fast-casual chain Sooyah Bistro has launched its 12th outlet, situated in Yaba, Lagos. 

This milestone marks another chapter in the growth of a brand that has gained prominence for its innovative approach to local street food and global cuisine since its inception in 2018.

Speaking at the launch, Sooyah Bistro’s founder, Olamidun Ogundoyin, noted the strategic importance of the Yaba location. 

“Yaba is a thriving locality in Lagos. We have been eyeing this location for years, and it’s an essential addition to our portfolio,” she stated. 

The chain’s other outlets span Lagos Island, the mainland, and Ibadan, Oyo State—where it opened its first branch outside Lagos in July 2024.

Founded in 2018 with an initial investment of just N20,000 (US$12.95), Sooyah Bistro has grown steadily despite Nigeria’s challenging economic climate, marked by a depreciating naira and high import costs. 

Ogundoyin’s journey began with selling suya (spiced, flame-grilled meat on skewers) from a supermarket, reinvesting sales to build the business. 

Today, the chain offers an expanded menu that includes burgers, chicken wings, pizza, pasta, pancakes, and Nigerian-style Chinese dishes, appealing to a broad customer base.

Innovative growth amid economic turbulence

Despite a currency depreciation of over 70% in the past year, Sooyah Bistro has demonstrated resilience through strategic planning and innovation. 

Ogundoyin attributed the company’s growth to a commitment to creativity and adaptability. 

“Businesses need to grow dramatically to survive. We have increased revenue, staff, and customer orders while expanding branches, proving that creativity and innovation are essential to staying competitive,” she said.

In October 2024, Sooyah Bistro further diversified its offerings by launching its own range of suya spices. The spices are available at its outlets and in supermarkets across Lagos.

Challenges and perseverance

Ogundoyin’s journey as a woman entrepreneur in Nigeria’s male-dominated business environment has not been without challenges. 

“As a woman, you have to work twice as hard to gain the same recognition or success,” she noted. 

Despite these hurdles, she emphasized the importance of perseverance, a quality that has been integral to the brand’s success story.

The company’s commitment to quality and hygiene has also played a significant role in its growth. Rigorous staff training and quality control systems ensure consistency across all outlets, a factor that Ogundoyin credits for building customer loyalty.

“Today, Sooyah Bistro stands as a Nigerian success story, combining tradition, innovation, and resilience to achieve impressive growth,” Ogundoyin remarked.
