Crown Beverages expands recycling efforts in Uganda through partnerships

UGANDA – Crown Beverages Limited (CBL), the authorized bottler of PepsiCo beverages in Uganda, has reinforced its commitment to sustainable waste management in collaboration with WastePays and with support from PepsiCo Sub-Saharan Africa.

The initiative, announced on Global Recycling Day, aims to improve plastic waste collection, enhance recycling efficiency, and promote environmental awareness.

Strengthening recycling infrastructure

As part of the program, over 500 waste collectors in Jinja are actively engaged in plastic waste collection. This initiative provides these individuals with a steady source of income while addressing the growing challenge of plastic pollution.

The collected waste is processed through designated recycling channels, ensuring that plastic materials are repurposed efficiently.

To further enhance transparency and efficiency in the waste collection process, CBL has integrated digital tracking systems in partnership with Uganda WastePays. These systems allow for real-time monitoring of plastic collection, optimizing waste recovery operations and minimizing inefficiencies.

Investing in community awareness and education

Beyond waste collection, CBL is extending its sustainability efforts to schools and the broader community.

The company has launched school-based recycling programs aimed at instilling environmental consciousness in young learners. Additionally, public awareness campaigns are being rolled out to educate communities about the long-term benefits of responsible waste disposal and recycling practices.

“Crown Beverages is directly addressing waste challenges in Uganda by implementing solutions that empower communities and reduce environmental impact. We encourage businesses and consumers to take part in these sustainability efforts,” said Rogers Anguzu, Commercial Manager at CBL.

Alignment with PepsiCo’s sustainability goals

CBL’s recycling initiative is in lign with PepsiCo’s sustainability vision for the Sub-Saharan Africa region.

PepsiCo has set a target to ensure that 98% of its packaging is recyclable, compostable, biodegradable, or reusable by 2025. The company is also working towards making 92% of its packaging recyclable based on available end-of-life solutions.

“Crown Beverages is bringing PepsiCo’s sustainability vision to life in Uganda. Their efforts demonstrate how strategic partnerships and technology can drive measurable impact, empower communities, and support the development of a circular economy,” said Bronwyn Patten, Senior Franchise Director, PepsiCo Sub-Saharan Africa.

“We are proud to be part of this initiative.”

The company, which is Uganda’s oldest soft drinks manufacturer, produces a variety of carbonated beverages, including Pepsi, 7UP, Mountain Dew, Mirinda, Sting, and Aquafina water.
