Coca-Cola Beverages Africa appoints first Ethiopian Managing Director

ETHIOPIA – Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) has appointed Melkamu Abebe as its new Managing Director in Ethiopia, marking the first time an Ethiopian has held this leadership role.

His appointment follows a successful tenure as General Manager of Coca-Cola Beverages Uganda (CCBU), where he oversaw the integration of separate bottling entities and achieved significant growth.

Abebe brings over 16 years of experience within the Coca-Cola system, having started his career through the company’s Graduates in Training Programme in 2008.

His journey within the organization has seen him excel in supply chain management and general management roles, demonstrating strategic leadership and operational excellence.

During his time as GM at CCBU, Abebe was recognized for his efforts in optimizing logistics and driving customer satisfaction, contributing to the company’s growth and market leadership in Uganda.

His extensive experience and leadership qualities are expected to drive continued growth and operational efficiency for CCBA in Ethiopia.

Returning to his native country, Abebe takes over from Daryl Wilson to lead CCBA’s operations in Ethiopia, a market with substantial growth potential for Coca-Cola products.

CCBA is the largest bottler of Coca-Cola brands in Africa, operating four plants in Ethiopia, including the country’s largest facility in Sebeta, which has a daily production capacity of 72,000 cases.

The company also owns Ambo Mineral Water Sc, further solidifying its market presence.

Abebe holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Addis Ababa University and has completed leadership programs at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

His educational background and extensive industry experience position him to lead CCBA Ethiopia’s strategic growth and expansion.

Gavin Hudson, Chief Operating Officer of CCBA, praised Abebe’s appointment, highlighting the company’s commitment to nurturing local talent and driving growth in key African markets.

“CCBA’s continued market success and status as the largest bottler of Coca-Cola brands on the continent reflect our commitment to being an employer of choice,” Hudson stated.

Abebe’s leadership is expected to strengthen CCBA’s position in Ethiopia, leveraging his deep understanding of the market and his proven track record of driving operational success.
