KENYA – African Originals, the Kenya-based craft beverage company, has expanded its regional footprint with the launch of its premium craft cider range in Uganda.
The move comes as part of a partnership with Vicland Distributors Uganda, a leading distributor of international brands, targeting both on-trade and off-trade retail channels.
The expansion marks African Originals’ first market entry outside Kenya, where it has established itself as a leading player in the premium cider segment.
Its ciders, made from locally sourced tropical fruits, botanicals, tea, honey, and indigenous berries, aim to meet growing consumer demand for products that emphasize natural ingredients and authenticity.
Six cider flavours — Pineapple & Mint, Passion & Lime, Lime & Ginger, Mango & Chilli, Honey & Lemon, and Hibiscus & Lime — are now available across selected outlets in Uganda.
According to African Originals, the company works closely with smallholder farmers across Africa to ensure a sustainable supply of ingredients, while supporting local agricultural communities.
Founder and CEO Alexandra Chappatte said that the company sees growth opportunities for premium craft beverages in East Africa.
“We believe the cider category has potential for expansion across East Africa, as consumers seek bold, authentic brands that incorporate a range of natural local ingredients,” said Chappatte.
“We are now the leading cider brand in Kenya, and we are excited to extend our portfolio to Uganda, where market research shows a growing appetite for premium options.”
New product launch: 5.8 Gin & Tonic range
Alongside its regional expansion, African Originals has introduced a new ready-to-drink (RTD) line under its 5.8 brand.
The new 5.8 Gin & Tonic range, crafted in Kenya, offers consumers convenience without compromising on quality.
B Corp certification recognition
Just last week, African Originals achieved B Corp certification, becoming the first gin and cider producer in Africa to attain this globally recognized accreditation.
B Corp certification is awarded to companies that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability, balancing profit with purpose.
The certification is in line with African Originals’ broader business philosophy, which focuses on supporting local farmers, reducing environmental impact, and fostering sustainable business practices across its operations.
Company growth and industry recognition
Since its founding, African Originals has expanded steadily. It started operations from a container production site in Meru, Kenya, and now operates four warehouses in Nairobi’s Industrial Area.
The company manages three brands: Kenyan Originals, African Originals, and 58.
Kenyan Originals, the flagship brand, was initially funded by founder Alexandra Chappatte alongside investment from Chandaria Capital. Over time, additional investors joined, providing capital and strategic support.
In addition to its commercial success, African Originals was recently recognized at the Africa Food Awards, where it received the Rising Star African Food Company of the Year award during a ceremony held at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi.
In a previous interview with TechTrends KE, Chappatte noted that her entry into the beverage industry was motivated by the unique structure of the Kenyan market.
“There is a monopoly in this space, and very few markets in the world remain at that level,” she said.
“That lack of competition limits real consumer choice.”
Outlook for East Africa’s beverage market
African Originals’ expansion into Uganda and launch of the 5.8 Gin & Tonic range come amid a changing market for alcoholic beverages in East Africa.
A report by Research and Markets projects a 5.5% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the African alcoholic drinks market between 2023 and 2028, driven by urbanization, rising incomes, and evolving consumer preferences.
The collaboration with Vicland Distributors Uganda provides African Originals with access to an established network of hospitality and retail outlets.
In Kenya, African Originals’ ciders are priced at approximately KES 280 (US$2.10) per bottle, with pricing in Uganda expected to be similar, adjusted for local market conditions.
